The SSC accelerator control system is characterized by large distances
, large numbers of nodes, high bandwidths and fast response time requi
rements [1]. These requirements have necessitated a reassessment of th
e applicability of the 'standard model' architecture [10] of accelerat
or control system networking. In addition, the long construction phase
of the accelerator complex and the desire for a homogeneous controls
architecture have meant a careful examination to see which present day
technology will have the necessary longevity to ensure that is still
appropriate at the end of the construction phase of the project. ''BUB
BANET'', the controls network for the SSC, will soon be operating in t
he initial section of the LINAC; the first in a chain of injectors of
the SSC. It will be expanded to encompass the whole of the accelerator
complex. We examine the issues effecting the choice of architecture f
or BUBBANET and report on the work carried out in order to make this n
etwork operational. We also describe work in progress to improve perfo
rmance and maintainability.
