Morphology-dependent stimulated Raman scattering (MDSRS) has been used
to monitor the degree of hydrogen bonding in water aerosols generated
by a vibrating orifice aerosol generator (VOAG). The results show tha
t aerosols created by a VOAG suffer extensive structural disruption an
d that the disruption is most pronounced at the aerosol surface. Labor
atory aerosols prepared in this way do not appropriately mimic those f
ound in the atmosphere, and the mass accommodation coefficients measur
ed using such aerosols should not be used in global climate modeling c
alculations.
