Abstract
The second-order optical nonlinearities and transparencies of eight su bstituted styrenes containing at least one sulfonyl group at the beta- position, as the electron-withdrawing group, were examined. Oxidation at a sulfur atom (SMe-->SOMe-->SO(2)Me) brings about increases in the beta and lambda(max) values.
