In this study, n-alkyltrimethylammonium ions ([CnH2n+N-1(CH3)(3)](+);
n=12, 14, 16, 18) were intercalated in the interlayer space of layered
sodium octosilicate (Na2Si8O17.nH(2)O) via an ion-exchange reaction.
The interlayer space was further modified by grafting of the trimethyl
silyl groups via a reaction between a dodecyltrimethylammonium-octosil
icate intercalation compound and chlorotrimethylsilane.
