L. Johansson et al., FORMAL AND INFORMAL SUPPORT AMONG ELDERLY IN A RURAL SETTING IN SWEDEN, Journal of gerontological social work, 20(1-2), 1993, pp. 79-95
More detailed knowledge is needed in Sweden about how the service and
care needs of elders are met and to what extent the help is provided a
s formal or informal support. A study of elders (75+) living at home i
n a rural municipality, showed that the majority of those interviewed
(n = 421) were fairly independent regarding basic ADL as well as instr
umental ADL. Those requiring help received this mainly as informal sup
port. The results of this study indicate that formal care has a comple
mentary role to informal support, even when formal care is relatively
well developed.
