This paper looks at the extent adult day care services and adult prote
ctive services overlap in meeting the needs of chronically ill adults.
Utilizing content analysis and a case study approach, the problems an
d progress of five patients admitted to an adult day care program in w
estern Massachusetts are examined in relationship to admission criteri
a for both programs. Analysis reveals a need for a range of day care m
odels. The paper also cites duplication of effort by health and social
service programs in case management responsibilities and proposes a '
'responsibility sharing'' service coordination model which may benefit
communities.
