This review surveys the results of a workshop conducted in the summer
of 1993. The purpose of the workshop was to assemble a group of univer
sity-based marine chemists, government scientists and funding personne
l, and industrial suppliers. Thus, these elements of the marine scienc
e community were encouraged to interact to more clearly define the sta
te and needs of the marine chemistry instrumentation field. The worksh
op was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the National Scie
nce Foundation.
