Abstract
We present a simple theory showing that open quantum well-wire structu res demonstrate striking polarization-dependent optical effects. The r eason for these effects is the inhomogeneous distribution of the elect ric component of electromagnetic field inside the nanostructure in cas es when the field has components normal to the semiconductor/vacuum su rface.
