Here we present a class of efficient techniques to calculate the elect
ronic states and the phonon modes of semiconductor quantum wires and q
uantum dots of general shape. In it, the differential equations and bo
undary conditions which determine these excitations are shown to lead
to integral equations over the interfaces of the nanostructures which
can be served straightforwardly by matrix techniques. Examples are giv
en of electron and phonon states of several quantum wire and dot struc
tures.
