Abstract
General expressions involving Mathieu functions are derived for the ma gnetic field and stored energy associated with distributed currents, f lowing, both azimuthally and axially, on the surface of an elliptic cy linder. These expressions can be used to design elliptical gradient co ils of minimum inductance for MRI, as well as elliptical coils that wi ll generate a uniform magnetic field or higher Order shim fields.
