A one-parameter model (xi) for stop-and-go noise is developed. The phy
sics of the phenomenon is based on the idea of the linear density of r
adiated energy. The methodology of xi determination has been worked ou
t and illustrated. The noise interaction with the surface of the groun
d is considered to be the only wave phenomenon that disturbs geometric
al spreading. The model makes possible the calculation of the correcti
on term in the time-average sound level, L(AT), as an adjustment to th
e constant speed model of traffic noise. (C) 1997 Acoustical Society o
