Abstract
The advantages and disadvantages of vaccination against foot and mouth disease are discussed. The structure and biological properties of the FMD virus which are relevant to the understanding of the epidemiology are described together with the development and application of the va ccines in Europe. Finally, an overview is given of the last major epid emic in Germany in the 1960s until the first freedom from FMD in 1969/ 70.
