The paper presents an analysis of the market subjects' behaviour shown
in the Slovak food market under the transition conditions. The relati
ons between demand and supply factors indicate small flexibility of ag
ricultural producers to match changing demand for foodstuffs. They als
o indicate intensive relations between food producers and retail. The
structure of the consumers' food expenditure does not convergate to th
e structures typical for the developed market economies. The fact is a
lso due to declining natural consumption of some important food items
and lack of market substitutes. Changes in the food market and its mai
n positive transition shifts are determined by extent and ra-pidity of
economic revival. It depends on the basic determinants such as invest
ment goods and intermediate goods markets. The scope of these activiti
es determine the economy output.
