Hydrosilation of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds catalyzed b
y hydridotetrakis(triphenylphosphine)rhodium(I) (1) was found to be hi
ghly regioselective, depending on the silanes used. Diphenylsilane was
found to give 1,2-hydrosilation, whereas dimethylphenylsilane and oth
er monohydrosilanes gave 1,4-addition. The kinetic isotope effect of t
he hydrosilation reaction was examined, and a mechanism was proposed t
o account for the regioselection and the kinetic isotope effect.
