Abstract
Magnetotactic bacteria contain magnetic particles that constitute a pe rmanent magnetic dipole and cause each cell to orient and migrate alon g geomagnetic field lines. Recent results relevant to the biomineraliz ation process and to the function of magnetotaxis are discussed.
