Two studies further investigated the psychometric properties of the se
rf-report Psychological Mindedness Scale (PMS), which has been shown t
o have good internal consistency and evidence of predictive and diverg
ent validity. Its construct validity was investigated by assessing (1)
whether total scores on the PMS of a group of medical students attend
ing a personnel clinic in a psychiatric outpatient setting would be re
lated in theoretically expected ways to their scores on a personality
test; and (2) whether total scores on the PMS of a group of regular cl
inic patients would have the expected theoretical relationships to sco
res on a measure of ego functions. The findings of both studies provid
ed support for the construct validity of the PMS. (C) 1995 by W.B. Sau
