Abstract
''Catalytic damage'' occurs in cotton fabrics during hydrogen peroxide bleaching. The model for catalytic damage proposed previously by Meye r, Kokot, Weber, and Zurcher is compared with a laboratory simulation of cotton cellulose damage produced using electrogenerated oxygen spec ies at metal electrodes. Additional electrochemical information is pro vided to support the previously proposed mechanism of the damage of a cotton poplin. Diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy and chemometr ics are used for relative qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the damage.
