Continuous chromatographic beds are synthesized by a simple and cost-e
ffective procedure which does not involve the conventional, time-consu
ming preparation of beads. The aim of this study was to improve the fl
ow properties of the beds by investigating how they are affected by po
lymerization temperature, the pH of the buffer in which the polymeriza
tion takes place, the nature of the constituents of this buffer, the c
oncentrations of catalyst and accelerator and the concentration of the
precipitating agent (ammonium sulfate). The influence of flow rate an
d the time constants of the detector and recorder on peak width was al
so studied.
