L. Abada et al., CEMS, CXMS AND X-RAY-INVESTIGATION OF THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF THE SURFACE-LAYER IN PLASMA NITROCARBURIZED STEEL, Hyperfine interactions, 94(1-4), 1994, pp. 2379-2384
The microstructure of the compound layer formed by plasma nitrocarburi
zing of steels has been investigated by means of conversion electron,
conversion X-ray Mossbauer spectroscopy (GEMS, CXMS) and X-ray diffrac
tion. A carbon steel C35 was plasma nitrocarburized using a gas mixtur
e of nitrogen, hydrogen and methane. The compound layer was mechanical
ly removed in steps, followed by Mossbauer and X-ray investigations. I
t was found that this layer consists of different nitrides and carbide
s. Their concentrations vary with the depth below the surface.
