Abstract
Distortion is the major obstacle to more aggressive decoding in curren t bar code decoders. The new decoder introduced in this paper is one o f the solutions to this problem for binary bar codes (e.g. CODE 39). T he new decoder is basically a minimum distance decoder that also utili zes distortion information from the start/stop characters. Security an d execution time issues are also addressed in the paper.
