Five cases of wheezing misdiagnosed as asthma are reported. Ages range
d from four to 12 years. There were two cases of cystic fibrosis and o
ne case each of laryngeal tumor, intrabronchial foreign body, and tube
rculosis with cavitation. In each case, the initial diagnosis of asthm
a was revised on the basis of investigations performed either routinel
y or because of a failure to respond to treatment. The main causes of
tracheobronchial obstruction are reviewed. Emphasis is put on the need
for a thorough work-up in pediatric patients with wheezing.
