A new series of interstitial ThMn12-type carbides of the formula RFe(1
0.5)Mo(1.5)C(x) (R = rare earth) were prepared by sintering the starti
ng intermetallic compounds with carbon powder at T = 873 K. The maximu
m relative volume increase of the unit cell upon the carbon insertion
ranges from 1.4% with Pr and Sm to 3.3% with Y, Ho and Er. Depending o
n the R element and the amount of carbon, the Curie temperature increa
ses from 65 to 140 K in comparison with the pure alloys. Whereas the a
xial anisotropy is enhanced for the Nd, Tb, Dy and Ho, the easy magnet
ization direction (EMD) changes from axial to easy plane for the Y, Gd
and Er carbides.
