Using strain-modulated ferromagnetic resonance method we have measured
the magnetostriction constant lambda(2) of Fe/Gd multilayers deposite
d using rf and de sputtering. For the samples deposited using rf sputt
ering the contribution to the effective magnetostriction due to the in
terdiffusion layers has been observed. Samples grown using de sputteri
ng are characterized by sharp interfaces with no indication of interdi
ffusion. In this case the magnetostriction consists of two components:
one due to the bulk magnetostriction and another due to the intrinsic
surface magnetostriction.
