Y. Danon et al., DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A THERMAL-NEUTRON TARGET FOR THE RPI LINAC, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section A, Accelerators, spectrometers, detectors and associated equipment, 352(3), 1995, pp. 596-603
To perform thermal cross section measurements the low energy neutron i
ntensity from the RPI linac facility was increased. A new Enhanced The
rmal Target (ETT) was designed, constructed and tested. The thermal fl
ux of the new target was up to sis times greater than the nux from the
previous RPI Bounce Target (BT). This additional gain allows transmis
sion measurements to be performed in the energy range of 0.001 to 15 e
V with high statistical accuracy in a short time (similar to 40 h). Th
e ETT was also designed to be coupled to a cold moderator that will gi
ve an additional flux increase factor of about 9 below 3 meV. Design c
alculations for the cold moderator including neutronics and cryogenics
are also given.
