X. Lepichon et al., SHEAR PARTITIONING IN THE EASTERN NANKAI TROUGH - EVIDENCE FROM SUBMERSIBLE DIVES, Earth and planetary science letters, 128(3-4), 1994, pp. 77-83
Submersible dives over the wedge of the easternmost Nankai Trough demo
nstrate the existence of a left-lateral strike-slip system parallel to
the subduction zone. This system develops as the trench, turning nort
hward toward land, becomes highly oblique to the motion. Although shea
r partitioning is well known in other subduction zones, the process he
re has the peculiarity of continuing northward into land.
