Little is known about people who perceive themselves at risk and those
who are concerned about contracting AIDS. This study examined demogra
phic predictors of two dependent variable, AIDS-related perceived risk
and concern. Data on 3,260 respondents (1,852 females and 1,408 males
) 18 years and older were collected using random-digit dialing and com
puter-assisted telephone interview procedures. Unmarried Anglo males w
ho know someone with AIDS were most likely to perceive themselves at r
isk but were least likely to be concerned about contracting AIDS. The
results are discussed in terms of designing targeted AIDS prevention p
rograms.
