This paper reviews practical issues arising from the findings of a rec
ent CEC research programme on the measurement and evaluation of indust
rial heat stress. A rationale is presented for the assessment of heat
stress in workplaces and the requirements of the industrial practition
er are defined. Issues relating to the selection of heat stress indice
s, measurement and integration of primary data and criteria are then d
iscussed, identifying difficulties encountered by the practitioner and
showing how the research findings can be used to overcome them.
