Several 2, 6-di(2-/4-substitutedphenyl)-1, 4-oxathian-4, 4-dioxides ha
ve been synthesised and their stereochemistry investigated using high
resolution H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectra. These compounds adopt chair c
onformation and the substituents are equatorially oriented. In the cas
e of 2, 6-di(2-substitutedphenyl)-1, 4-oxathian-4,4-dioxides in which
the phenyl groups are having the substituents with lone pair of electr
ons, equatorial hydrogens on C-3 and C-5 appear to be deshielded.
