In a study of spore wall pigments of eleven species of the Orders Lice
ales and Trichiales - taxa which are traditionally separated from the
dark-spored Orders Physarales and Stemonitales by their variously colo
ured spores - it was found that even in these bright-spored Orders, me
lanin was present in the spore walls of all the species. In addition,
there were several organic-solvent-extractible pigments, usually in lo
w amounts.
