Abstract
Since the phase out of halon use there is an urgent need for finding a lternative compounds for fire suppression. The objective of this work was to provide experimental results on the species formed in a methane flame seeded with CF3I. The influence exerted by CF3Br on the structu re of the same methane flame has been studied as well to allow a direc t comparison of the mechanisms induced by these two additives. The ref erence stoichiometric methane flame (flame I) and the flames seeded wi th 0.5% CF3Br (flame II) or 0.5% CF3I (flame III) were stabilized on a flat flame burner at low pressure (4,2 kPa). Species identification a nd quantitative analyses were performed by the molecular beam-mass spe ctrometry technique.
