Diagnosis of trisomy 18 was made following prenatal screening at 11 we
eks' gestation for ultrasonographically detected nuchal translucency a
nd subsequent chorionic villus sampling. An intact fetus was therapeut
ically aborted and pathological examination was undertaken. We conclud
e that, although the etiology of nuchal translucency remains unclear;
it does not appear to be lymphatic or cardiac in origin.
