The thallium, plutonium and lanthanide double sulphate tetrahydrates T
IM(III)(SO4)(2).4H(2)O, (M(III)=Pu, Sm to Dy) were synthesized and cha
racterized by chemical, thermal, IR and X-ray powder diffraction metho
ds. The X-ray data showed that the crystals are monoclinic, of space g
roup P2(1)/c, with four formula units per unit cell and that the pluto
nium and the lanthanide compounds are structurally isomorphous to RbLn
(SO4)(2).4H(2)O reported in the literature. The IR spectra coupled wit
h the X-ray data showed that the trivalent metal ion is coordinated to
nine oxygen atoms. The heats of dehydration were calculated from meas
urements of peak areas under the differential thermal analysis curve r
ecorded during thermal dehydration of all TILn(SO4)(2).4H(2)O compound
