We give a detailed expose on the calculation of O(alpha(s)) correction
s to the cross section for the semiweak production of single top quark
s in hadronic interactions. After introducing the different sub-proces
ses and defining their kinematics, we briefly recall the computation o
f the O(alpha(2)) qb --> q't and O(alpha(s) alpha(2)) qg --> q't $$($)
over bar b Born amplitudes squared. Next, the calculation of virtual
and bremsstrahlung corrections is presented. We adopt a massive quark
and massive gluon regularisation scheme. We explicitly demonstrate can
cellations among various radiative corrections and we describe the pro
cedure of absorbing remaining singularities in the parton density dist
ribution functions. Finally, numerical results are given. We find a cr
oss-section enhancement of roughly 30% (for m(t) approximate to 174 Ge
V/c(2)) with respect to the Born contribution. We observe good agreeme
nt between the exact calculation and the approach where the mass singu
larity is subtracted from the sum of the O(alpha(2)) and O(alpha(s) al
pha(2)) tree-level expressions.
