Abstract
The limitations of the traditional thermodynamic approach in dealing w ith the nonlinear range of irreversible processes are reviewed. It is suggested that to arrive at a satisfactory characterization of nonequi librium states an enlarged formulation of thermodynamics, incorporatin g tools and concepts from nonlinear dynamics and stochastic processes, is necessary.
