CONCEPTS OF COMPETITION

This paper surveys ways in which competition can promote productive ef ficiency. Some concepts of competition and their historical developmen t are outlined. There is discussion of effects of competition on (i) i ncentives for efficiency within organizations, (ii) the process of sel ection between more and less efficient organizations, and (iii) innova tion and dynamics.
