Hispanic women are less likely than Angle women to obtain cervical can
cer screening. This article describes a project conducted in the lower
Rio Grande Valley to encourage indigent, mature, Hispanic women to ob
tain Pap screening. Social and demographic data were correlated. The p
roject's results indicate that it is possible to motivate the targeted
population to obtain Pap screening. They also suggest that community
health workers were very helpful in motivating this community's women
and that these women continue to need informal, active encouragement f
rom many sources.
