This article reports on the prevalence and rehabilitation needs of vis
ually impaired residents of nursing homes, based on optometric examina
tions of 136 residents of a nursing home in Staten Island, NY. The res
ults indicate that about half the residents were at least moderately v
isually impaired and almost one-third were potential candidates for lo
w vision assessments, or rehabilitation training, or orientation and m
obility services.
