Sk. Pradhan et al., SYNTHESIS OF ALUMINUM-MATRIX COMPOSITES CONTAINING NANOCRYSTALLINE OXIDE PHASES, Bulletin of Materials Science, 17(6), 1994, pp. 849-853
Using nanocrystalline particles of mullite and zirconia respectively w
ith diameters in the range 20-30 nm prepared by a sol-gel route, alumi
nium metal-matrix composites have been synthesized. A hot pressing tec
hnique has been used with temperatures varying from 450-610 degrees C.
The vickers hardness values for the composites are found to be substa
ntially higher than that of pure aluminium. An order of magnitude incr
ease in hardness is achieved when Al5Mo phase is grown in the composit
e.
