Changes in western societies seem to have made the identity status of
diffusion - as a ''culturally adaptive'' diffusion - quite functional
for identity development, proposes J. E. Marcia (1989). Starting from
his discussion preliminary findings of a qualitative longitudinal stud
y on the identity development of adolescents in Germany are presented.
Some differentiations on the term of the ''culturally adaptive diffus
ion'' are proposed. The qualities of diffusion as a coping strategy ar
e emphasized.
