Abstract
Some of the salient points pertaining to the use of bacteriorhodopsin are reviewed. The basic photochemistry of the photochromism and photoi somerisation in bacteriorhodopsin is emphasised. Methods for immobilis ing the purple membrane in polymer matrices facilitating the fabricati on of thin films are also discussed. Finally, a summary of the most co mmon applications in optical processing is presented.
