We report the bench testing of three new anaesthesia ventilators : Fle
xima(TM) (Datex), SA2/RA2(TM) and Cato(TM) (Drager). The test circuit
included a two compartment lung model, a pneumotachograph and a pressu
re gauge. Volume was integrated from flow signal. The tidal volume del
ivered by the Flexima(TM) and SA2/RA2(TM) ventilators decreased with i
ncreasing mechanical work load contrarily to the Cato(TM). Moreover, t
he tidal volume of the Flexima(TM) increased with the fresh gas flow.
In spontaneous ventilation inspiratory resistance were low.
