The Tibagi River basin, with a drainage area of 25,000 km2, made up by
the Tibagi River, with a length of 530 km, and its 65 affluents and h
undreds of subaffluents, is the third biggest basin of the Parana Stat
e, Brazil. With the objective of knowing the Tibagi River ichtyofauna,
fish were collected in five localities, from near the source to the P
aranapanema River to its mouth. Fifty-three fish species were captured
, representing 15 families. A tendency to an increase in the number of
species was observed from the source to the mouth of the river. At th
e same time, in Telemaco Borba (middle Tibagi) where a large industria
l complex is located, the least species diversity and a high value for
dominance, with only two species composing more than 80% of the numbe
r of specimens there collected, were found. In Sapopema (middle Tibagi
) the greatest diversity of species was found; also the greatest wealt
h and least dominance. The locality of Sertanopolis, with semilentic c
haracteristics caused by the Capivara reservoir on the Parana River, p
resented an ichtic fauna with dominance of predatory species.
