Antimicrobial resistance in pneumococci is well established, Of major
concern is the development of resistance to penicillin; however, reduc
ed susceptibility to other commonly used agents such as chloramphenico
l, erythromycin, and tetracycline has also been observed with increasi
ng frequency.(1,2) We wish to report the isolation of a clinical strai
n of Streptococcus pneumoniae with intermediate susceptibility to peni
cillin (minimum inhibitory concentration, 1 mg/L), which was also resi
stant to numerous other antimicrobial agents.
