Vb. Aleskovskii et al., IR SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF THE REACTION OF IRON(III) CHLORIDE VAPOR WITH PARTIALLY DEHYDROXYLATED AEROSIL, Russian journal of applied chemistry, 67(2), 1994, pp. 192-195
The successive reactions of the vapors of iron(III) chloride and water
with samples of partially dehydroxylated silica (aerosil) in the proc
ess of molecular layering were investigated in situ by IR spectroscopy
, using a high-vacuum technique, in the range 3900-2300 cm-1 at temper
atures below 573 K. It was shown that all silanol groups, apart from t
hose in narrow pores, enter into reaction with FeCl3 on the condition
that HCl is absent. In the presence of HCl, all other things being equ
al, the degree of silanol group replacement depends on the partial pre
ssure of HCl.
