Taiwan's current economic success is partly the result of nearly half
a century of careful government planning. However, the dramatic rise i
n the prosperity of this relatively small island has produced an almos
t proportional decline in Taiwan's natural-environment endowment. A cr
itique of past energy policies, with respect to transportation, is pre
sented, with a look ahead to Taiwan's environmental challenges. Transp
ort policy recommendations are made which will enable the Taiwanese pe
ople to achieve a less environmentally damaging, more sustainable econ
omic prosperity.
