Hq. Wu et T. Stathopoulos, FURTHER EXPERIMENTS ON IRWINS SURFACE WIND SENSOR, Journal of wind engineering and industrial aerodynamics, 53(3), 1994, pp. 441-452
The simple surface wind sensor proposed by Irwin measures wind speeds
through pressure differences. It has been applied in several wind-tunn
el laboratories for the study of pedestrian-level wind conditions. How
ever, some characteristics related to sensor performance for wind-tunn
el measurements have not been fully investigated. Discussed in this pa
per are: calibration of the sensor for measuring mean and rms wind spe
eds, the effect of sensor height on measurement errors, thr: interfere
nce between nearby sensors, and the response of sensors to turbulent w
ind conditions. Data presented here supplement Irwin's original result
s on the surface wind sensor anti provide additional insight in the pe
rformance of the sensor.
