This article examines how the new concept of parity challenges the pol
itical traditions of the contemporary French feminist movement. It emp
hasizes the theoretical effort this concept requires as well as the re
vival of the activism it calls for. Parity is a claim that stems from
a new social and ideological context which is very different from the
one of the seventies, although the idea is the product of the gains th
at have been achieved since that time by women. This concept and its p
rospects may be the starting point of a new, broad, national women's m
ovement - provided that today feminists understand what is at stake in
the struggle and play their part in it.
