Abstract
In the field of peritoneal dialysis, the biocompatibility of dialysis solutions is an important factor for prolonged treatment. The experien ce of our group has shown that tests with cultured mesothelium can pro vide data on growth, development and morphology of mesothelium exposed to solutions of different formula. Data on mesothelial secretions, su ch as phospholipids, cytokines, eicosanoids and enzymes, can also be o btained. Studies of this kind, together with those in animals in vivo (histology and observation of the microcirculation) can provide data e ssential for a correct formulation of new solutions.
