Abstract
A patient with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome requiring pr olonged tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation is described. T racheal dilatation was noted to have occurred following an elective su rgical tracheostomy Eventually, the patient was successfully weaned fr om mechanical ventilation and the tracheostomy tube removed.
