The literature on experimental investigations of gas-generating porous
electrodes with solid polymer electrolyte (GPE+SPE) contains a great
variety of opinions as to the most important parameters, that is, abou
t the necessary thickness of the porous layer that would guarantee cur
rent densities of about 1 A/cm(2) (different sources indicate the valu
es from 0.1 to 500 mu m), the weight of platinum black (in different p
apers it varies between 0.1 and 10 mg/cm(2)), and so forth, The presen
t paper is concerned with a theoretical evaluation of principal parame
ters of GPE+SPE. Theoretical investigation of GPE+SPE has been shown t
o call for the solution of a radically new problem, namely, the proble
m of double percolation. It is demonstrated that optimization of param
eters of GPE+SPE can make it possible to produce electrodes with curre
nt densities of 1 A/cm(2) at overvoltages of 20 and 200 mV on the cath
ode and the anode, respectively.
